Crew Members Encourage Heat Safety
Summer temperatures are already soaring high into the 90's and show no sign of cooling off. During the summertime, the Danville Life Saving Crew answers a large amount of calls due to heat related illnesses.
"If you're going to be outside, make sure you drink a lot of fluids, especially water," Charlotte Newnam, Danville Life Saving Crew EMT basic, said.
When temperatures are hot, it is important to stay hydrated and not over exert yourself. Heat exhaustion can happen quickly if you are dehydrated or spend too much time in direct sunlight. Symptoms can include muscle cramps, dizziness, vomiting, heavy sweating, extreme thirst, mild confusion and fainting.
"Around summertime we see an increase in calls with these symptoms," Peyton Parrish, EMT basic, said.
If these symptoms occur, move out of direct sunlight and loosen tight clothing. Apply cool, wet towels to your face, neck, chest and limbs. If possible, have someone fan your skin and drink water or sports drinks every 15 minutes. However, if you come upon someone who is non-responsive, call 9-1-1.
Other types of illnesses like heat cramps and heat stroke can also occur. These heat related illnesses are more likely to occur in those who are elderly, obese or pregnant. Also, people with preexisting conditions like cardiovascular disease, hypertension or respiratory disease are at a higher risk of falling victim to these illnesses.
To stay healthy this summer, be sure to drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors as much as possible and don't over exert yourself in direct sunlight.
